What the municipal rules say

Nelson adopted replacement Zoning Bylaw 3652 on April 14, 2026.

What applies locally

The city explicitly confirms the new bylaw is effective. Its current Secondary Suites & Laneway Houses guidance states that secondary suites and laneway homes are allowed in most residential districts subject to zoning and permitting.

Important limits and exceptions

The city warns pre-adoption engagement materials may not match final 3652. Look up the current zone/map, emergency access, parking, setback, and lane-house standards; a permit is always required.

Before work begins: confirm the lot’s actual zoning, mapped overlays, legal parcel characteristics, servicing and applicable building permit conditions with the municipality.

Guide review: Verified informational guide; parcel eligibility not verified. This does not approve a development or building permit.

Municipal guidance is a starting point, not a property approval. This page does not calculate a legal unit count for an individual lot.

How this guide was verified

Guide verification: Targeted municipal source review documented. Selected rule or adoption claims were checked against named official material and recorded in the site research notes. This is not a complete current bylaw, zoning-map or amendment certification.

Property confidence: Not assessed. City-wide guidance does not confirm permission for a particular parcel. Check official zoning, overlays and permits. How verification works →
