The city’s existing-suite legalization webpage opens with an April 17, 2023 Council decision extending the amnesty deadline to April 30, 2027, but it still contains older April 2025 wording below. Because the official page conflicts with itself, obtain direct written confirmation before relying on either deadline. This amnesty does not authorize a new suite.
Before work begins: confirm the lot’s actual zoning, mapped overlays, legal parcel characteristics, servicing and applicable building permit conditions with the municipality.
Indexing: City guide: enacted rules summarized; parcel permit not verified. Municipal guidance is a starting point, not a property approval. This page is not municipal permission for a specific address.
Use these tools only after confirming the municipal path. Cost planning and contractor matching do not establish zoning, code compliance or permit approval.
OFFICIAL CITY GUIDANCE CONFLICT — grace-period deadline unresolved Cranbrook’s current secondary-suites page gives April 30, 2027 in its introduction but April 30, 2025 in its Grace Period text; an older municipal release also gives 2025. These conflicts prevent a verified current deadline or fee-waiver guarantee.
Still to verify: Ask the City for the operative policy/resolution and current fee status before advertising amnesty. The program described concerns pre-existing nonconforming suites, not construction of new suites.
Municipal source research, not comprehensive certification or a permit. Official source links remain at the bottom of this page.
Current finding: The City secondary-suite page says April 30, 2027 in its introductory paragraph but April 30, 2025 later under Grace Period; a 2023 notice independently names 2025. Neither date is safe as definitive without written current confirmation.
Still requires verification: Obtain a current Council resolution/policy amendment or written Planning/Building confirmation of the applicable grace-period deadline.
Evidence level: CONTRADICTORY MUNICIPAL DEADLINES RECONFIRMED. Not a parcel-specific or complete legal approval.
Official-source finding: The City’s primary opening notice says pre-existing nonconforming suites received an extended grace period ending April 30, 2027, while an older paragraph still says 2025.
Not yet cleared: Flag both contradictory dates; seek written municipality confirmation before a homeowner relies on the deadline, especially for penalties/amnesty eligibility.
Evidence status: CONFLICT IN OFFICIAL GUIDANCE. This is not a complete adopted-bylaw, zoning-map, appeal or property-specific approval determination.
Guide verification: Targeted official-source claim check (12 October 2026); not a comprehensive enacted-bylaw signoff. The identified claim is supported by or compared with the linked official source, subject to the verification limitations below.
Property confidence: Not assessed. City-wide guidance does not confirm permission for a particular parcel. Check official zoning, overlays and permits. How verification works →

Official-source claim check · 12 October 2026: City suite page says April 17, 2023 Council action extended pre-existing suite amnesty to April 30, 2027 but also retains outdated April 2025 language lower down. Official municipal evidence ↗ Remaining verification: The municipal page contradicts itself; written confirmation is needed for the deadline and any newer amendments. No deadline treated as guaranteed.
