Start with Grande Prairie’s current suite guidance
Grande Prairie’s dedicated secondary-suite page routes applicants through development, building and applicable electrical, plumbing and gas permits. The exact approval path depends on the property and the city’s current land-use bylaw.

Alberta: the provincial layer
Alberta’s building code has specific requirements for houses with secondary suites, while municipalities decide where suites are allowed through local land-use bylaws.

What kind of unit?
The phrase “additional unit” can cover several designs. Use the municipality’s exact category for the project.
Is the use allowed?
The zoning question should be answered early because it can change whether the project is as-of-right, discretionary or not available.
Can the building comply?
Do not budget only for finishes. Code work can include exits, alarms, fire separations, mechanical changes and structural alterations.
Can the site serve it?
The parcel has to support the unit physically as well as legally, including servicing, access and any required setbacks.
How to sequence a Grande Prairie suite project
For detached units, add site servicing and setbacks early. For internal suites, investigate the existing building and life-safety upgrades before finalizing the layout.
For an older suite, confirm whether it was permitted under a previous rule, legalized later, or never received final approval.
