The consolidated bylaw generally treats secondary suites as self-contained accessory units associated with a principal home; suite rules, registration and applicable zone permissions must be checked together.
Detached homes are regulated as accessory detached dwelling units, not by automatically applying internal-suite floor limits. Verify amendments after the published consolidation and permits.
Before work begins: confirm the lot’s actual zoning, mapped overlays, legal parcel characteristics, servicing and applicable building permit conditions with the municipality.

Enter a street address. We’ll match it to Camrose and show available municipal planning information that requires independent verification.
Uses Natural Resources Canada’s national Geolocator to match the address. Any planning result is preliminary and must be checked against the current municipal bylaw and permit office.
The broader Northern Alberta housing pattern does not replace the Camrose approval file. Confirm this address and unit type with the local source.
Alberta’s building code has specific requirements for houses with secondary suites, while municipalities decide where suites are allowed through local land-use bylaws.
Alberta secondary-suite building code ↗Land Use Bylaw 3222-22, sections 9.28.4–9.28.5, sets a maximum of one secondary suite per lot and generally caps its gross floor area at 40% of the principal dwelling’s gross floor area. Section 9.28.5 expressly excludes basement suites from that size cap. These points are confirmed in the published consolidated bylaw; check later amendments and parcel zoning.
Section 9.28.10 restricts an accessory detached dwelling unit to a corner lot or a lot with a rear lane. The bylaw also regulates the garage as principal use, setbacks and parking; detached permission is not automatic on other lots.
Camrose requires development and building permits for accessory detached dwelling units. The City describes these detached units as available on corner lots and lots with a lane; that does not remove applicable district, siting, setback or permit requirements. Submit the detached-unit application, site and parking plan, and building drawings. Confirm lot access and zoning before design.
This is the simple build-direction summary. The exact property still has to meet its zoning, site, servicing and permit requirements.
Before you build: confirm the exact property, zoning and permit path with Camrose.
This preliminary guide does not answer whether a particular parcel is approved. The next two steps are budgeting and contractor scoping; neither replaces municipal approval.
Planning sequence: rules → budget → written scope / contractor. Cost models and contractor matching do not determine whether the municipality will approve the work.
Land Use Bylaw 3222-22, section 9.28, generally limits each lot to one secondary suite and limits non-basement internal suites to 40% of the principal dwelling’s gross floor area; a basement suite has no such maximum under this section. Accessory detached dwelling units are subject to additional rules, including a corner lot or rear lane condition. Check the zone and later amendments.
